Wheels to Prosper 2014 car

Our Wheels to Prosper 2014 car, a 2004 Ford Escape

We have less than 3 months to go, folks! We are ramping up our efforts for 4th annual Wheels to Prosper now – over the past few weeks, the Amarillo Bulls donated a $1,000 check for fixing up our Wheels to Prosper car, and Channel 7 News donated our Wheels to Prosper car, a 2004 Ford Escape.

But what would Wheels to Prosper be without nominations from our wonderful neighbors?

This year, the Wheels to Prosper car giveaway will take place on Saturday, July 26 at noon right here at Aardvark Automotive.

Entries must be turned in by July 15th at MIDNIGHT!!

If you or someone you know has fallen on hard times but is constantly giving back to the community, let us know about it! To nominate someone, fill out our application, available here. Attach a short essay telling us why this person deserves the car.

Our day at the Annual Amarillo Autism in Action Awareness Walk

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the 4th Annual Amarillo Autism in Action Awareness Walk at Sam Houston Park two Saturdays ago, on April 12! Our amazing service writer, Brandon Anderson, helped set up and man our table along with his wife, Renee, and adorable daughter, Maddie. Brandon’s son, Sean, has autism, so this walk was of great personal importance to all of us at Aardvark Automotive (check out the cute Aardvark Automotive poster hanging from our table, with Sean’s picture).

Every year, Amarillo Area Autism in Action puts on the Awareness Walk to raise money for autism education, detection, and treatment. The walk also raises awareness of the disorder while encouraging participants to have a great time!

There was a huge turnout for the event and we passed out goody bags, bubble containers, and water to everyone who passed by. The weather held up great and George Jones, one of our technicians, stopped by with his daughter, Kadee, to say hi.

Check out the slideshow of the event below.

Remember, April is National Autism Awareness Month! To learn more about autism and local events around your area, visit the Autism Society.

Highlights from our Wheels to Prosper giveaway this past weekend!

Every Wheels to Prosper giveaway is special to us, but this year in particular was twice as nice. Instead of just giving away one car, we were fortunate enough to give away two! This year’s giveaway took place at Aardvark Automotive on Saturday, July 27th, 2013. Without further ado, the winners of our 2013 Wheels to Prosper giveaway are…

Mr. & Mrs. Lennie McCay and Katrina Penny.

Mr. & Mrs. Lennie McCay were nominated by Jennifer Butler.  In the nomination letter, Jennifer wrote, “The McCays have 5 daughters and 3 are still at home. Mr. McCay is an associate pastor and his wife is a stay-at-home mom. They are continually focused on helping others’ needs. They currently have a Toyota Corolla that was recently rear ended.  All they have left to drive is a very small pickup with a serious oil leak. It is my understanding that this pickup will go to college with one of the daughters. This family is not so quick to accept any kind of handouts, but they desperately need this car. The car would be well taken care of if given to this loving family. Thank you for your consideration.” The McCays were the recipient of the ’95 Chevy Suburban. They were very surprised and happy to have a vehicle to drive.

Katrina Penny was the recipient of the ’04 Dodge Intrepid. Katrina is a 52-year-old grandmother raising her four grandchildren.  Katrina has rheumatoid arthritis and has been legally disabled since 2004. Eight months after she was diagnosed she gained custody of her grandchildren, three handsome boys and one beautiful girl. At the giveaway she told us, “this car will change our lives. Thank you.”

All of us here at Aardvark Automotive felt amazing being able to help these deserving families thrive with a car that will get them through their daily lives.

We had about 35 people attend the giveaway to show their support, and even got a visit from the Amarillo Bulls mascot, Rampage, who brought along the Bulls’ huge Robertson Cup National Champions trophy. The Bulls also brought the mini Wheels to Prosper Mercedes-Benz we sponsor, which races around the concourse during Bulls games. It was a cute sight indeed watching all the little ones hop into the car!

Please enjoy a recap of the giveaway in the gallery below.

Note: We are always looking for cars for our next Wheels to Prosper giveaway! You can help the giveaway by donating a car you no longer need or want. Please contact us at the shop for more information.

Buy raffle tickets for this Saturday’s Kids Racing for Charity event at the Bulls game, benefiting Wheels to Prosper!

Our Wheels to Prosper program is one of the biggest highlights of the year for everyone at Aardvark Automotive. Summer will be here before you know it so we are kicking into full gear in preparation for our July 27th Wheels to Prosper giveaway.

For each Wheels to Prosper giveaway we fully inspect and repair a vehicle, then donate it to a chosen family in need.

This Saturday, March 16, we will be holding a Kids Racing for Charity raffle at the Amarillo Bulls’ last home game in order to raise enough money to service a giveaway vehicle. The race and the raffle will take place at some point during the intermissions (note: the winner does not have to be present to win).

The game itself starts at 7 PM at the Civic Center.

Just think: Wee little kids in wee little cars, grinding their way past one another on the road to victory. We doubt you can do anything more adorable this Saturday.

Buy a raffle ticket (or 12!) and you’ll be entered for a chance to win a Kindle Fire 7” HD or a 7-piece flank drive plus combination wrench set 3/8-3/4”. We will be selecting two winners whether our sponsored car – a mini Mercedes-Benz – wins or not.

100% of the proceeds will go towards Wheels to Prosper.

The prize

There will be two drawings, with one of the following prizes given out at each drawing:

A Kindle Fire 7” HD

A 7-piece flank drive plus combination wrench set 3/8-3/4”

100 Days of Diapers: Now accepting diaper donations!

Via Flickr user Morydd

Aardvark Automotive is helping Cal Farley’s new initiative, 100 Days of Diapers, by accepting diaper donations at our shop.

Running from March 11 through June 24, 100 Days of Diapers aspires to get one person per day to donate a package of diapers to a family in need.

Sizes 3, 4, and 5 are most needed. As a price estimate, a 144-count pack of Size 3 diapers is $20 at Walmart and will last approximately two weeks.

Diapers are very important supplies for those affected by poverty since most places that hand them out for free only dispense ten or so at once. But, as anyone who has children knows, 10 diapers is only enough to get you through one day.

Diapers are an urgent necessity for many families, so we encourage you to help out!

Donation Information

There are 3 ways you can donate diapers:

  1. Drop them off at our shop.

Come meet us at Cal Farley’s community development events Feb. 25 & 28!

Most of us stuck in the rat race take advantage of the little things. Between commuting to and from work, grinding through the work day, shuffling our kids around, making dinner, and perhaps going out to see a movie, we forget that some people come home to little at all.

Poverty is a multifaceted problem, stemming from various causes such as domestic abuse, immigration, and being a member of the working class.

At Aardvark Automotive, our community is not simply a location for our shop – it is the heart and soul of who we are and why we still exist today. Our goal is to consistently give back to a community that has given us so much in the past 33 years.

We try to help others out whenever possible, whether it’s providing food or a refurbished car for a deserving individual.

We have worked with Cal Farley, one of America’s largest privately funded child and family service providers, for 2 years and support its mission of providing care and opportunity to those in need.

As such, we’d love to invite you to two upcoming classes hosted by Cal Farley. No Excuses No Limits Amarillo aims to encourage young adults to go to college so they have better opportunities in life and in the workplace.

Meanwhile, Let’s Talk Neighborhood Food Pantries allows you to meet and to listen to the stories of those affected by poverty. The environment is completely non-judgmental and the class is offered to help people understand what they can do to help others. Whether you help collect necessary food items or donate a washer and dryer because you got a new set, you will be improving your neighbors’ lives in more ways than you know.

So drop by at either event (or both!) and say hi! Just make sure to RSVP beforehand. Event details are below.
